Fluoride Treatments: Are They Safe for Children?

Maintaining healthy gums and teeth is crucial for your child's overall well-being. That's why your child's healthcare provider will discuss good dental hygiene practices even before your little one gets their first tooth.
Once your child has a tooth, your pediatrician may suggest fluoride varnish treatments during office visits. Fluoride varnish, or simply fluoride, helps to prevent cavities. Fluoride can be applied 2 to 4 times a year, depending on your child's risk of developing cavities.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Association, and many other health organizations advocate for the use of fluoride to aid children in developing strong teeth and establishing a lifelong foundation for oral health.
Read on to learn more about fluoride and how it can help safeguard your child's dental health.
What is fluoride?
Fluoride varnish is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, which is the protective outer layer of teeth. It is designed to prevent tooth decay, slow its progression, or stop it from worsening.
It's important to note that while fluoride varnish treatments are beneficial, they cannot completely eliminate the risk of cavities. These treatments work best when combined with regular brushing using the appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, flossing, routine dental visits, and a nutritious diet.
Is fluoride safe?
Fluoride varnish is safe and is widely used by dentists and doctors around the globe to help prevent tooth decay in children. Only a small amount is applied, and very little fluoride is ingested. The varnish is quickly applied and hardens upon contact with saliva, and it is removed after 4 to 12 hours.
Some fluoride varnish brands may temporarily make teeth appear yellow or dull, but rest assured, your child's teeth will return to their normal color once the varnish is brushed off. Most children find the taste quite pleasant!
How is fluoride varnish applied to the teeth?
The application of fluoride varnish involves painting it onto the top and sides of each tooth using a small brush. It has a sticky texture but hardens when it comes into contact with saliva. Your child might feel the hardened varnish with their tongue, but they won't be able to lick it off.
The application process is painless, though younger children may cry before or during it. Thankfully, applying the varnish only takes a few minutes. In fact, it can be easier to apply when a child is crying, as their mouth may be slightly open.
You might be asked to hold your child in your lap while you sit knee-to-knee with the person applying the varnish.
General tips for caring for your child's teeth after fluoride varnish application:
Your child can eat and drink immediately after the fluoride varnish is applied, but it's best to stick to soft foods and liquids that are cold or warm (avoid hot items).
Refrain from brushing or flossing your child's teeth for at least 4 to 6 hours. Your child's doctor may recommend waiting until the next morning to resume brushing or flossing. If your child knows how, remind them to spit when rinsing.
Be sure to consult your child's doctor for any additional instructions.
Key steps for maintaining good dental health include:
Regular brushing and flossing, along with adequate fluoride.
Limiting sugary beverages and sticky, sweet, or processed snacks like candy. Instead, offer nutritious options such as fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, yogurt, and water or milk.
Routine dental care from a dentist experienced in treating young children in a dental "home."
The AAP recommends that all infants undergo oral health risk assessments by 6 months of age. Infants at higher risk for early cavities should see a pediatric dentist by 6 months old or no later than 6 months after their first tooth erupts, or by 12 months of age (whichever comes first). Ideally, every child should establish a dental home by 12 months of age.
